Web Host

Simply put, a web server is computer used to transmit web content. Anyone may set up a standard computer (PC, Mac, or otherwise) in the privacy of their own home to transmit web content. However, most home users do not have the facilities or knowledge to effectively manage a commercial-grade web server and instead turn to the professionals (web hosts) for web hosting services.

Web hosting services are normally leased in yearly or multi-year increments. Most hosts simplify the payment process by offering optional auto-renewal services. If you do not already have a web host, please sign up for a basic hosting plan at LunarPages . The plan is normally $6.95 per month but is currently on special for $4.95 per month. The plan includes the lifetime registration of your site’s domain name. This is a great deal. Other hosts normally charge $10-20 per year to renew your site name’s registration. (I explain domain names in more detail in the next section.)

When prompted for a password, please use a secure password that is easily remembered. A secure password is normally defined as 8 or more alphanumeric characters including at least one number, capital letter, and special character. An easy example is " Iluv2ski! ". You may measure your password’s strength at https://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/checker.mspx . But please… choose a password you can remember!

Domain Names

So wonderful, you’ve uploaded a beautiful website to your web host. But how will others find it?.. via a domain name of course! Domain names are shortcuts to your website. A website may have zero, one or multiple domain names pointing to it; but a domain name may only point to one and only one website.

Every web site is actually referenced as a single numerically addressed Internet resource… a combination of four numbers, each ranging from 0-255 (such 19.148.12.86). But using this as your business’s web name is about as useful as referring to your business’s address by its nine-digit zip code (i.e. 19148-1286). Domain names were established to provide an intuitive symbolic representation for web resources.

A domain name is a combination of names used to identify you website (subdomain.2nd-level.top-level). You register your desired 2nd-level.top-level domain name with a registrar to establish a link between your numeric address and the easy-to-remember symbolic domain name. In the simplest of terms, these registrars maintain a system of computer servers around the world that redirect users to your site when your domain name is entered.

Like web hosting, domain names are normally leased in yearly or multi-year increments with optional name auto-renewal. The domain does not have to be purchased through your web host, but it is best (and easiest) in the long run if done so. A primary domain name is established during the sign up process with your web host.

Alternate domain names and domains may also be purchased through your account by following these steps.
\n\n\n\n

Subdomains

Once you have registered your domain name you may freely create a virtually infinite number of subdomains. For example: If you have registered

Here are some great tutorials from Wordpress to get you started. Remember to SAVE YOUR POSTS FREQUENTLY !

Introduction to Blogging

Writing Posts A MUST READ!

HTML to XHTML

Creating Individual Pages

Using Images

FAQ New To WordPress

Additionally, since articles may be written in WYSIWYG mode or code mode (strict HTML conveniently enough), classes may be added to help with formatting. They are easily accessible via the ‘Styles’ drop-down menu in the visual editor.

‘More Tag’

When documents are previewed, such as when multiple posts are viewed via a search or category listing, they will appear unformatted. To tidy their appearances you should include a ‘more tag’ after introductory paragraphs. The tag has no effect on the post when viewed directly (in its full format).

The ‘more tag’ is available through the edit bar or may be manually coded.

Table of Contents (ToC)

Documents (posts) with two or more ‘headings’ defined will have a ToC automatically generated for them. ToCs are visible in the upper corner of applicable documents. This feature is made available by the Table of Contents Generator WordPress plugin .

TOCs only appear if you have marked your document with headings.

Linking Internal Documents

Three methods exist to create links to Obeid Lab internal documents:

Permalinks or ’slugs’ (the term for the intuitive reference names assigned to posts, i.e. /help)

IDs

Full html reference (i.e. http://obeidlab.com/help)

Using the numeric values found in the ID column of the Posts, Categories, and Pages Administration , you can create links as follows.

To link to a Post or Page:

<a href="/help">Post Title</a>

or find the ID of the target post/page on the Posts/Pages administration panel, and insert it in place of the ‘27′ in this link:

<a href="/p=27">Post Title</a>

To link to a Category or Archive List

To link to a Category, find the name of the target Category and insert it as in this link:

<a href="/category/help">Help Category</a>

To link to a Date-based Archive

Day: <a href="/index.php?m=20060101">Jan 1, 2006</a>

To link to an External Site

If you are providing a link to your site from outside of your site, be sure to specify a full URL to the correct location:

Footnotes (Citations & References)

It is possible to use ’self-numbering’ citations in your posts thanks to the WP-Footnotes Plugin .

Creating a Citation

To create a footnote, include the reference information inside of double parentheses anywhere in your post you’d like to cite a source. This only needs to be done once per reference source. For example (Note: an extra space was included between the ‘((’ to prevent its encoding ):
